KLH Gives Denpasar–Badung One Month to Sort Organic Waste at the Source
Denpasar–Badung: One-month deadline to sort organic waste from the source
The Minister of Environment, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, has given a one-month deadline for the Denpasar City Government and Badung Regency in Bali to complete the sorting of organic waste at the source. “We have asked the Mayor of Denpasar and the Regent of Badung to finish sorting organic waste at the source within the maximum one month from now. We want everyone to hurry, no one should slack off,” said Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq on the sidelines of a beach-cleaning event at Jimbaran Beach, Badung, on Thursday.
The Minister noted that if the habit of sorting organic waste is not practiced by the people of Denpasar and Badung within a month, the stakes will be sanctions against their regional leaders. Currently the Ministry of Environment has entered the investigation phase into the Suwung landfill, so if organic waste continues to enter, criminal sanctions await.
The Minister acknowledged that regional governments in Bali, especially Denpasar and Badung, have prepared all facilities to resolve organic waste at the source, such as modular plants and composters. What needs to be done by the community, he added, is to build a culture of waste sorting from households and primary schools to community institutions.
The Minister also encouraged self-managed enterprises to participate in intensifying waste sorting, so that the practice which previously only involved transporting and dumping into the Suwung landfill changes and reduces the waste entering.
The central government itself is developing Waste-to-Electricity Technology (PSEL) that will solve all waste problems on Bali. However, as the project is projected to be completed in 2.5-3 years, the waste pile in Bali will not be finished within three years unless organic waste is reduced.
