KLH Calculates State Losses from Forest and Land Fires Reach Rp5.30 Trillion, 19 Companies Under Investigation
The Ministry of Environment (KLH)/Environmental Control Agency (BPLH) continues to process companies suspected of causing forest and land fires (karhutla) in several regions. At least 19 companies have been held accountable for violations they committed.
“For the period 2023 to 2025, there are 32 unresolved cases, with potential environmental losses of Rp5.30 trillion,” said Deputy for Law Enforcement at KLH/BPLH, Police Inspector General Rizal Irawan, during a press conference in Jakarta on Monday, 31 August 2026.
Rizal said that law enforcement against forest and land fire cases is carried out through three channels: administrative sanctions, environmental disputes or civil lawsuits, and criminal proceedings.
“Criminal cases will be handled by investigators from the Indonesian National Police, from the regional police level, district police, to the National Police Headquarters,” he explained.
Since January until now, Rizal stated that KLH/BPLH has taken supervisory actions against 19 companies spread across seven provinces. These actions include installing monitoring signs, sealing, and other measures carried out by Environmental Supervisory Officials (PPLH).
Of the 19 companies, seven are located in West Kalimantan with a total burned area reaching 2,260.08 hectares. In addition, four companies are in South Sumatra with a total burned area of 772.72 hectares.
In South Kalimantan, there are three companies with a total burned area reaching 6,595.15 hectares, the largest area compared to other regions mentioned by KLH/BPLH.
Furthermore, two companies are in Central Kalimantan with a total burned area of 99.40 hectares, one of which has a burned area of around five hectares. Meanwhile, in Lampung there is one company with a burned area of 202.73 hectares, and in Riau one company is recorded as having a burned area of around 7.10 hectares.
Overall, the 19 companies are spread across provinces in Sumatra and Kalimantan with a total burned area reaching approximately 11,046.69 hectares.
