KLH/BPLH Holds Digital News Writing Training for Environmental Communication Staff
The second batch of ‘The Classroom’ training programme continued on 2 July 2026 at Wisma PGN Diklat Megamendung, Bogor, West Java. The session focused on equipping staff from the Ministry of Environment and Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH) with news writing skills relevant to the digital era.
Romi Setiawan, Head of the Communication, Information and Education Working Group at KLH/BPLH, encouraged participants to broaden their perspectives beyond the institution. ‘There is a saying, “don’t be a frog in a coconut shell.” We must not be satisfied with what we have within our own institution. We need to continuously learn and understand developments outside KLH/BPLH,’ he stated. He added that collaboration with detikcom, as a digital media representative, was strategic in demonstrating the importance of speed in conveying information and managing public communication.
The training featured a session on ‘Journalism in the Click, Swipe & Scroll Era’ led by detikFinance Managing Editor Angga Aliya ZRF. Angga explained the evolution of mass media from print dominance to the current landscape driven by online platforms and social media. He highlighted the shift from editor-driven to audience-driven content, stressing the need for writers to understand what the public wants to read. ‘The audience is no longer searching for news; they are served news by algorithms. This creates personal information bubbles,’ he said.
Angga provided practical tips on writing compelling news in a fast-paced digital environment, including the importance of adhering to the 5W+1H principle, using simple language, and supporting stories with strong data and facts. The session also covered crisis communication strategies, emphasising the need for speed and accuracy when managing issues that could threaten an institution’s operations or reputation.
The 34 participants, representing various units handling environmental control, ecosystem management, climate change, and waste management, also undertook a practical exercise to rewrite existing news articles with new, more engaging angles. Participant Zeezilia Yusuf noted the training provided valuable new knowledge in content creation, news writing, and branding strategies. Fellow participant Danang Budi Santoso, named best participant, appreciated the relevant insights and expressed hope to implement the skills at his workplace.
