Klaten on Full Alert Against Forest and Land Fire Threats

The Klaten Regency Government in Central Java held a troop readiness assembly for the prevention and handling of forest and land fires (karhutla) at the Klaten Regency Pendapa on Tuesday (4/8). The assembly, led by Klaten Bupati Hamenang Wajar Ismoyo, served as a joint commitment to ensure the readiness of personnel, infrastructure, and cross-sector coordination in facing potential fires. The preparedness activity to address the threat of forest and land fires during the dry season was attended by joint forces from the Klaten Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the Transportation Agency, the Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP), the Klaten Police, and the 0723/Klaten Military District Command. In his address, the Bupati stressed that the troop assembly was not merely a ceremonial event, but a tangible demonstration of the readiness of all elements to face the threat of forest and land fires that could occur at any time. He noted that global climate change is causing more extreme weather and rising temperatures, which increases the risk of fires. The Bupati highlighted that the impact of forest and land fires extends beyond vegetation damage, affecting public health through smoke exposure, damaging ecosystems, threatening community livelihoods, causing economic losses, and hindering regional development. He added that handling must be comprehensive, covering prevention, early detection, rapid response, and post-fire recovery. The Bupati also urged the public not to clear land by burning, as it can have widespread and difficult-to-control consequences.
