KL waives fees to lure airlines
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia said on Friday it would waive landing and parking fees for five years on new flights to Kuala Lumpur to turn its showpiece airport into a major hub for Southeast Asia.
The move is seen as helping the ultra-modern but under- utilized Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) battle established hubs such as Singapore's Changi and Bangkok's Don Muang.
The official Bernama news agency said the government also waived the fees for new flights by carriers already operating at KLIA, located about 60 km (37.5 miles) from the city center.
The new concession will supersede the existing 50 percent discount on landing and parking fees for new and existing carriers adding more flights into KLIA, Transport Minister Ling Liong Sik said. -- Reuters
