KL to use spies to curb corruption
KUALA LUMPUR (DPA): Malaysia's Home Ministry will appoint "spies" in several of its departments in a bid to curb corruption especially among police and immigration officials, news reports said yesterday.
Deputy Home Minister Megat Junid Megat Ayob named the police and immigration departments as the top two agencies under the ministry where corruption was rampant, although he could not give any figures.
"This was because the departments have a lot of dealings with the public, and often bribes were received for certain favors," he was quoted as saying.
The informants, he said, will keep tabs on the activities of all employees and report any dubious dealings to the Anti- Corruption Agency (ACA). Those found guilty can face disciplinary action or be sacked.
Megat Junid said the government is determined to stamp out corruption among civil servants in Malaysia, which was recently ranked as the 26th most corrupt nation in a world corruption index.
