KL to boost ties with Singapore

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia will seek to boost its informal ties with Singapore after years of strained relations, Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar said Sunday.

"There will be a lot of interaction and movements from both sides," he was quoted as saying by the national Bernama news agency after playing golf with Singapore Foreign Minister S.Jayakumar here.

Syed Hamid said both countries should take advantage of the positive "mood" created by the recent visit of Singapore's Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew to Kuala Lumpur.

Hishammuddin Hussein, youth leader of the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), would lead a delegation to meet his counterpart from Singapore's People's Action Party (PAP) soon, Syed Hamid added.

He also called for more informal interaction between civil servants and private sectors in the two countries.
