KL to amend drugs laws

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia's government is to amend laws in
March to enable owners and managers of nightclubs to be
prosecuted if drugs are found on their premises, reports said
yesterday.

Deputy Home Minister Megat Junid Megat Ayub said most of the
owners and managers of nightspots were aware of the use of drugs
in their premises but chose to ignore it, the Star daily
reported.

He said there was no law against those who collaborated with
their drug-taking or drug-selling patrons. The amendments would
be made to the Dangerous Drugs Act to enable the government to
charge them.

Police said they had identified 20 entertainment centers in
Kuala Lumpur and in its suburb of Petaling Jaya which have turned
into distribution centers for "Ecstasy" pills. Malaysia's
neighbor, Indonesia, last month passed a drug law endorsing the
death penalty for Ecstasy smugglers.
