KL tightens watch on nightspots
MALAYSIA: Kuala Lumpur is stepping up surveillance at nightspots frequented by Westerners in the wake of blasts that killed at least 183 people on Indonesia's holiday island of Bali, a senior security official said on Monday.
The official said police were confident that an earlier crackdown on suspected militants meant there was no longer a network capable of carrying out a similar attack on Malaysia, but added that they would take sensible precautions.
Malaysia and Singapore both use a security law which allows detention without trial. Indonesian police lost similar powers after the ousting of the dictator President Soeharto in 1998.
The official said police in Malaysia will be on guard against cars left parked for an unusually long time, especially around the downtown nightclubs in Kuala Lumpur, or the suburb of Bangsar where Westerners hang out at the bars and restaurants. --Reuters
