KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia's opposition on Sunday hailed the
release of a student activist held without charge for 23 days
under the country's controversial Internal Security Act (ISA).
Mahfuz Omar, youth chief of the opposition Parti Islam
SeMalaysia described Khairul Anuar Ahmad Zainuddin's release as
proof that students were not involved in militant anti-government
activities.
The New Sunday Times reported that Khairul Anuar, 24, was
released on Saturday. He had been detained under the ISA, which
allows indefinite detention without trial, on July 5.
Khairul Anuar and seven other students had previously been
arrested and bailed following an anti-ISA protest last month at
the National Mosque.
On July 16, University Malaya student leader Mohamad Fuad
Mohamad Ikhwan, 22, who was also held under the ISA for 10 days,
was released.
