KL party gets university
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia's largest Chinese party has finally secured government approval to build a private university after a 30-year wait, reports said on Monday.
Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) president Ling Liong Sik was quoted by The Star as saying that he had received an approval letter from the education ministry to set up the University Tunku Abdul Rahman.
"This is a 30-year-old dream come true and a historic moment for MCA," said Ling, who is also the transportation minister.
He said the MCA had the capability to run the university based on its experience of operating a private college, the Tunku Abdul Rahman College, since 1969.
The university, which will be open to all races, will be a new entity and not an upgrade of the college, he said, adding that he hopes to finalize the details before the end of the year.
