KL issues warning to foreign workers
KUALA LUMPUR (DPA): Malaysia has warned foreign workers it
will revoke their work permits if they misbehave and ignore local
sensibilities, following a brawl earlier this week involving
about 200 villagers and Bangladeshi workers, news reports said
yesterday.
Deputy Human Resources Minister Kadir Sheikh Fadzir also
advised employers to keep a check on their workers or face losing
paid levies and agency fees if their workers are deported home.
About 150 Bangladeshi male workers and 50 local residents were
involved in a brawl at a village in southern Johore state late
Monday, which stemmed from an argument between a taxi driver and
a Bangladeshi passenger.
News reports quoted witnesses as saying the driver had
admonished the Bangladeshi for fondling his woman companion in
the taxi. The two men got into a fight which was joined by local
villagers and Bangladeshi workers at nearby factories.
Police fired two shots into the air to break up the brawl in
which seven Bangladeshis were badly injured.
