KL gets tough on illegal workers
JAKARTA: Malaysian police are keeping an eye on its coasts in anticipation of an influx of illegal Indonesian job seekers after Idul Fitri.
Of particular concern is the coastlines of Selangor where the police know of some 30 places where thousands of illegal Indonesian job seekers usually land.
Police said that to evade arrest, boat skippers usually kept changing landing places.
The affluent Malaysia has taken harsher measures in a bid to minimize the smuggling of illegal workers. Hundreds of thousands of Indonesians work, legally or otherwise, in Malaysia notably on plantation and construction projects.
Recently, Indonesian illegal workers were involved in rioting at a detention center where they had been housed before deportation. --Antara
