KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): The Malaysian government has approved construction of three highways worth about six billion ringgit (US$2.30 billion) to ease chronic traffic jams, reports said yesterday.

Works Minister S. Samy Vellu said the highways would be built on a build-operate-transfer basis, The Star newspaper reported.

The first project, the Kuala Lumpur elevated highway, costing about 2.43 billion ringgit would be undertaken by Madang Permai Sdn. Bhd., MKM Kecamna Sdn. Bhd. and Garuda Bhd.

They would enjoy a concession of 30 years.

The second project, the Pandan highway corridor worth about one billion ringgit would be undertaken by Konsortium Alloy Consolidated and Puncak Sabit Sdn. Bhd. also with a 30-year concession.
