KL blaze leaves many homeless
KUALA LUMPUR (AP): A fire that swept through a Kuala Lumpur
shanty inhabited mainly by Indonesian migrant workers destroyed
nearly 2000 abodes and left thousands of people homeless, a
newspaper reported yesterday quoting fire officials.
No injuries were reported.
About 30 firefighters in four trucks fought the blaze in the
Kampung Perak neighborhood for two hours Tuesday evening before
it was doused, Sun newspaper said.
The absence of roads leading to the settlement that sprung up
five years ago prevented fire trucks from reaching the site until
30 minutes after the blaze started.
Aided by strong winds, the blaze spread quickly through houses
in the cramped five hectare area, the daily said. The cause of
the fire was not immediately known.
