KL 2nd satellite launched

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia's Binariang Sdn. Bhd. strengthened its position in the communications and aerospace industry with the launch yesterday of the country's second satellite, company officials said.

The Malaysia East Asia Satellite-2 (MEASAT-2) will enable Binariang to provide a "full spectrum of satellite services", the company said in a statement.

An Ariane rocket carrying MEASAT-2 and an Arab satellite, blasted off from French Guiana yesterday, witnessed by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. Malaysia's first satellite was launched into orbit in January this year.

MEASAT-1 and MEASAT-2 are owned by Binariang and are to be used by sister company Measat Broadcasting Network Systems Bhd. for satellite television and radio here.
