KKP urges industry to absorb domestic vannamei shrimp production
The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has urged the shrimp processing industry to prioritise the use of domestically produced vannamei shrimp after 120 tonnes of shrimp from Ecuador entered Indonesia in June 2026.
Acting Director General for Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fisheries Products at KKP, Erwin Dwiyana, said the vannamei shrimp entered through the Port of Tanjung Perak in Surabaya as raw material for the processing industry.
“KKP did not issue an Import Requirement Plan (RKI) for the vannamei shrimp in question. The import was carried out through a Bonded Zone facility where the obligation of prohibitions and restrictions in the form of Import Approval has not yet been applied,” Erwin said in an official press release in Jakarta on Wednesday.
He explained that the data was obtained based on coordination between KKP and the Directorate General of Customs and Excise at the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Trade, and the Indonesian Quarantine Agency.
KKP has ensured that the use of the imported vannamei shrimp as raw material for the processing industry is carried out in accordance with statutory regulations.
According to him, the Indonesian Quarantine Agency has also conducted health inspections on the shrimp from Ecuador, including testing for White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV), with negative results.
Nevertheless, KKP is encouraging the processing industry, exporters, and importers to prioritise the use of domestically produced vannamei shrimp while still paying attention to quality, volume, continuity of supply, and the specifications required by the industry.
According to Erwin, this step is necessary to strengthen the absorption of domestic production, maintain the sustainability of aquaculture businesses, and support the competitiveness of the national shrimp processing industry.
KKP also appreciates input from aquaculture associations and business actors regarding the impact of vannamei shrimp imports on the sustainability of national aquaculture businesses.
He said this input will be taken into consideration by the government in strengthening shrimp commodity policies.
He explained that the shrimp industry has a broad business chain, ranging from hatcheries, provision of feed and production facilities, aquaculture activities, processing, storage, to logistics and marketing.
For this reason, KKP considers that the fulfilment of raw materials for the processing industry needs to be managed in a balanced manner while maintaining the sustainability of domestic aquaculture production and export competitiveness.
Shrimp is one of Indonesia’s main fishery export commodities. KKP noted that over the past five years, the average value of Indonesia’s shrimp exports reached 1.93 billion US dollars (Rp34.4 trillion) with a volume of approximately 229.25 thousand tonnes.
