The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has sealed Umang Island in the waters of Pandeglang Regency, Banten. The sealing was carried out after the five-hectare island was promoted for sale via the internet. Director General of Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance, Pung Nugroho Saksono, stated that initial investigations showed the island is managed by PT GSM and utilised as a tourism area, such as a resort and marine tourism. “Following the sealing on Thursday, we will conduct further in-depth investigations regarding regulatory and ownership aspects,” Pung said during a press conference at the KKP Ministry in Jakarta on Wednesday, 15 April 2026. However, the island’s managers have stated that they never sold the island through online platforms. As of 7 April 2026, the Umang Island sale advertisement has also been removed from the xmarks.prestige property agency website. In the initial investigation, the Ministry of Marine Affairs also found several permit violations. The managers of Umang Island are known not to have the Approval of Marine Space Utilisation Activity Suitability (PKKPRL) document, recommendations for small island utilisation, and marine tourism permits. Based on these findings, KKP also sealed the resort and glamping facilities on the island. Pung expressed regret over the promotion of the island’s sale, especially since its location is in waters relatively close to Jakarta, about 183 kilometres away. He emphasised that this sealing demonstrates KKP’s commitment to safeguarding Indonesia’s maritime areas. In the future, KKP will not hesitate to take action against violations. “The state has rules. Small island management cannot be done arbitrarily, including in development,” said Pung.
