KKP Partners with State-Owned Enterprise to Manage Salt Industry in Rote Ndao, NTT

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is partnering with state-owned enterprise PT Garam to manage the salt industry in Rote Ndao, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). The KKP and PT Garam have signed a joint agreement concerning the management of the National Salt Industry Centre (K-SIGN) area in Rote Ndao. The agreement was signed by the KKP’s Director General of Marine Management, Koswara, and PT Garam’s President Director, Abraham Mose, on the sidelines of the KKP’s 2026 National Coordination Meeting in Jakarta on Wednesday (2/7/2026). Through this collaboration, the KKP and PT Garam will synergise in the operation, utilisation, maintenance, and development of the K-SIGN area so that it can be managed professionally, productively, and sustainably. The details of the cooperation will be set out in a subsequent cooperation agreement document. ‘With the support of PT Garam’s experience as a state-owned salt enterprise, we are optimistic that the K-SIGN programme can develop into a centre for national salt industry growth capable of supporting the acceleration of salt self-sufficiency,’ Koswara stated. Koswara explained that the presence of K-SIGN in Rote Ndao is not only to increase national salt production capacity but also to create economic added value through the involvement of local government, communities, and business actors in the area’s development. PT Garam’s President Director, Abraham Mose, expressed appreciation for the trust placed by the KKP in the company as a strategic partner in managing K-SIGN. He noted that synergy between the government and state-owned enterprises is key to delivering a more competitive national salt industry. ‘PT Garam is committed to supporting the management of K-SIGN through the implementation of professional governance, strengthening operational capacity, and collaborating with all stakeholders. We believe this cooperation will be an important foundation in strengthening the national salt industry while providing economic benefits to communities around the area,’ Abraham said. Through this synergy, the KKP and PT Garam are pushing for K-SIGN to become a new driver of the national salt industry. The integrated management of the area is expected to increase domestic salt production and quality, strengthen national industrial resilience, and open up more employment and business opportunities for coastal communities.
