KKP Collaboration Strengthens Marine Management to Support Blue Economy
The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), through its Directorate General of Marine Management, is strengthening marine and coastal management to support the implementation of the blue economy. Through strategic cooperation with the Directorate General of Regional Development at the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) and the World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia, the KKP is promoting collaboration to support more measurable marine development planning, improve the effectiveness of resource management, and strengthen the implementation of the blue economy at both national and regional levels. The strengthening of this collaboration was marked by the signing of two Cooperation Agreements during an introductory event and technical workshop for the Ocean Calculator Platform in Jakarta on Wednesday, 25 June 2026. This partnership serves as a crucial foundation for developing data, information, human resource capacity, and integrated, science-based marine management policies. Director General of Marine Management, Koswara, asserted that effective marine management requires accurate, open data that can be utilised jointly by all stakeholders. ‘Effective marine management must be supported by accurate data that can be shared among all stakeholders. Through this synergy with Kemendagri and WRI Indonesia, we want to ensure that development planning, coastal ecosystem management, and the utilisation of marine resources are carried out in a measurable way so that the benefits can be felt sustainably by the community,’ he said. Koswara added that the development of ocean accounting and the use of the Ocean Calculator platform will strengthen the government’s ability to map the economic, social, and ecological value of marine resources. This information serves as a critical foundation for producing more targeted, effective policies with long-term impacts on both society and the environment. Representing the Directorate General of Regional Development at Kemendagri, Suprayitno emphasised that marine management cannot be separated from regional development, given that most regions in Indonesia are closely linked to coastal and marine resources as drivers of the local economy. ‘The signing of this cooperation will strengthen the synergy between central and regional governments in realising sustainable development, while ensuring that marine potential can be managed optimally to support public welfare,’ he stated. Meanwhile, WRI Indonesia Country Director Nirarta Samadhi noted that strengthening marine governance requires sustainable cross-sector collaboration to address future challenges in managing coastal and marine areas. ‘Through this partnership, we aim to support the government in providing more comprehensive information on the condition and value of Indonesia’s marine resources. This will enable more effective, inclusive, and sustainable planning, investment, and management of coastal areas,’ he said. The signing of the two agreements is also part of efforts to reinforce the implementation of the Directorate General of Marine Management’s priority programmes, including blue carbon ecosystem management, ocean accounting development, marine debris reduction, and capacity building for stakeholders in supporting Indonesia’s blue economy. This collaborative step aligns with the policy of Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, who has made the blue economy the direction for national marine and fisheries sector development. Through data-driven, science-based, and cross-sector collaborative marine management, the KKP continues to promote the sustainable use of marine resources to maintain ecosystem health while creating economic added value and improving the welfare of coastal communities.
