The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has organised technical guidance and certification for 25 local residents who will manage the National Salt Industry Centre (K-SIGN) in Rote Ndao Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. The programme, which included training in effective communication, salt production equipment operation, salt production techniques, occupational health and safety, and competency certification, took place in Kupang from 3 to 5 July 2026.

The participants include residents from Matasio, Serubeba, and Lakamola villages in the East Rote District, as well as five personnel from the Kupang Salt Production Centre.

Director of Marine Resources, Frista Yorhanita, stated that the technical guidance and certification programme is part of the KKP’s strategy to prepare an integrated salt industry ecosystem. This includes everything from area development and governance strengthening to enhancing the quality of human resources as the primary drivers of the salt industry.

“The development of K-SIGN must be accompanied by the readiness of human resources capable of operating the area professionally. Therefore, K-KKP is equipping the community with the knowledge, skills, and competency certification so that they can become part of the management of a modern and competitive national salt industry,” Frista said in an official statement in Jakarta on Monday, 6 July 2026.

This training, Frista added, is also a form of local community empowerment to enable them to take a larger role in the development of K-SIGN. By increasing the competence of the workforce around the area, the benefits of development will be reflected not only in increased national salt production but also in the creation of job opportunities, the growth of supporting businesses, and the improved welfare of coastal communities.

“KKP believes that the success of K-SIGN development is determined not only by infrastructure and technology but also by the readiness of competent human resources,” she concluded.
