KKP and Community Handle Stranded Humpback Whale in Perancak Beach, Bali

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is handling the stranding of a humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) on Perancak Beach, Jembrana Regency, Bali. The whale was first spotted by local residents on Saturday afternoon (29/3).

The Head of the Jembrana Marine and Fisheries Resources Monitoring Unit (PSDKP), Made Gede Suardana, stated that his team received a report from the Perancak Village Head regarding the stranded whale. The team immediately coordinated with the Bali Coastal and Marine Resources Management Centre (BPSPL), the Jembrana Fisheries Service, and the local community to conduct an inspection and attempt to rescue the marine mammal.

Based on the initial inspection, the humpback whale was estimated to be around 10 metres long and was still alive when first found. However, the whale was in a weak condition and stranded in shallow waters. The joint team attempted to guide the whale back to deeper waters, but the effort was hampered by the receding tide and the whale’s large size.

The KKP, through the Directorate General of Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance (PSDKP), continues to monitor the whale’s condition and coordinate further handling steps. The team is also preparing a necropsy procedure if the whale dies, to determine the cause of stranding. The public is urged not to approach or disturb the whale and to report any developments to the authorities.
