The evacuation of the pilot of an Associated Mission Aviation (AMA) aircraft, who fell victim to an armed criminal group (KKB) in Balinggama, Yahukimo Regency, Papua Pegunungan, has been hampered. Bad weather forced the evacuation team to postpone the recovery of the body.

Head of Information for Koops TNI Habema, Lieutenant Colonel Inf Wirya Artadiguna, explained that the evacuation team had been dispatched from Timika to the scene. However, after flying for approximately 15 minutes, the team decided to return due to unfavourable weather conditions.

β€œThe plan is for the team to be flown back to Balinggama on Friday morning (3/7) to evacuate Nicholas F Goselin (20 years old), an American citizen who was reported dead,” said Lieutenant Colonel Inf Wirya Artadiguna on Thursday (2/7) evening.

Based on reports received, the tragic incident occurred on Thursday (2/7). Besides causing the death of pilot Nicholas F Goselin, members of the KKB also set fire to the aircraft with flight number PK-RCY.

The ill-fated plane was travelling the route from Wamena to Balinggama. In addition to the pilot, the aircraft was carrying seven passengers.

Security forces continue to monitor the situation in the Balinggama area while waiting for weather conditions to improve in order to continue the evacuation process and take further security measures at the scene.
