KJRI Provides Legal Certainty for Indonesian Marriages in Sabah via Menikum 2.0

The Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in Kota Kinabalu has provided legal certainty for 71 Indonesian couples in Sabah, Malaysia, through the Menikah Untuk Melindungi (MENIKUM) 2.0 programme. The programme, held from 30 June to 3 July 2026, represents the Indonesian Government’s commitment to ensuring legal recognition, protection of civil rights, and improved access to various state services for families abroad. Consul General Noorman Effendi stated that marriage registration services are not merely an administrative process, but a crucial part of the state’s effort to build a strong foundation for Indonesian families. He emphasised that the service ensures every Indonesian family receives legal recognition, state protection, and a solid foundation for their children’s future. For many Indonesians working on plantations in Sabah, marriage registration is more than just paperwork. A valid marriage document serves as an important basis for family protection, legal status certainty for husband, wife, and children, and acts as a gateway to various state services, including birth registration, civil administration, education access, and healthcare. The MENIKUM programme is a public service innovation first initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kota Kinabalu in 2011. To date, 34 integrated service activities have been held as a result of synergy between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Religious Affairs, and the Ministry of Home Affairs, bringing increasingly accessible public services to Indonesian citizens abroad.
