Tokyo–(ANTARA/Business Wire)– Kioxia Corporation, a global leader in memory solutions, today announced that it has begun shipping evaluation samples(1) of embedded flash memory compatible with the next-generation UFS standard, UFS 5.0, which is being standardized by JEDEC. (2)

UFS 5.0 is a new standard for embedded flash storage being developed by JEDEC to meet the performance requirements of next-generation mobile devices such as high-end smartphones equipped with on-device AI functions. The standard uses MIPI M-PHY version 6.0 for the physical layer and UniPro version 3.0 for its protocol. M-PHY version 6.0 introduces a new HS-GEAR6 mode, which theoretically supports interface speeds of up to 46.6 Gbps per lane. With 2 lanes, UFS 5.0 can achieve an effective read/write performance of approximately 10.8 GB/s.

These evaluation samples utilize a new controller developed by the company for UFS 5.0 and Kioxia’s 8th-generation BiCS FLASH™, and are available in 512 GB and 1 TB capacities. The package features a new, compact design measuring 7.5 x 13 mm, which improves board space efficiency and design flexibility.

The samples are being provided to customers who are developing host systems compatible with UFS 5.0, allowing them to evaluate performance and test interoperability.

Kioxia will continue to introduce new flash memory technologies into UFS products to meet the growing demand for larger capacity and higher performance in the mobile device market.

Notes:

  1. These samples are for evaluation purposes only. Sample specifications differ from commercial products.

  2. Shipments of 512 GB evaluation samples began on February 24, while 1 TB samples will begin shipping in March and beyond.

• Whenever Kioxia products are mentioned: Product density is identified based on the density of the memory chip in the Product, not the amount of memory capacity available for data storage by the end user. The capacity that consumers can use is less due to data overhead area, formatting, bad blocks, and various other constraints, and varies depending on the host device and application. For detailed information, please refer to the applicable product specifications. Definition of 1KB = 2^10 bytes = 1,024 bytes. Definition of 1GB = 2^30 bits = 1,073,741,824 bits. 1TB = 2^40 bits = 1,099,511,627,776 bits.

• 1 Gbps is calculated as 1,000,000,000 bits/second and 1 GB/second is calculated as 1,000,000,000 bits/second.
