Kintamani Farmers Move Beyond Green Bean Sales with Independent Roasting
The dependence of coffee farmers on low-margin green bean sales is being eroded by residents of Pengejaran Village, Kintamani District, Bangli Regency. Through the Sumber Wana Village Forest Management Institution (LPHD), the local farming group is now independently processing their harvest into premium-quality roasted coffee and ground coffee.
This leap in the production chain is supported by the provision and technological assistance of a modern coffee roasting machine from the community service team (PkM) of Ganesha University of Education (Undiksha).
The head of the Undiksha PkM team, I Gede Astra Wesnawa, said that the greatest added value in the coffee industry has so far been enjoyed by outside parties due to limited processing facilities at the farmer level.
“So far our farmers have only stopped at the harvest and drying stage and then sold green beans. Yet the biggest economic value surge lies in the roasting and packaging process. We want to break that chain so that the profits remain in the village and are directly felt by the residents of Pengejaran,” said Wesnawa in Pengejaran Village, Bangli, on Thursday (20/8).
The roasting machine, with a capacity of 5 kilograms per process, is equipped with precision control instruments such as a digital drum thermometer, digital bean thermometer, speed control, and a cooling blower system. The presence of this technology allows farmers to adjust the roast level of the coffee beans according to market preferences.
The village head of Pengejaran, I Wayan Arta, said that the availability of an independent roasting machine marks an important moment for the economic independence of his village.
“Previously we had no choice but to release green beans at middleman or large buyer prices. Now, gradually, LPHD Sumber Wana can roast its own beans with measurable quality standards. We are optimistic that we can build a distinctive Pengejaran Village coffee brand with high competitiveness,” said Arta.
In addition to the physical handover of the machine, the LPHD Sumber Wana administrators were also provided with technical training covering equipment operation, roasting temperature management, and routine maintenance so that production can run sustainably.
This downstreaming programme is funded by the Directorate of Research and Community Service (DPPM) of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (Kemendiktisaintek) of the Republic of Indonesia through the 2026 Region-Based Empowerment Scheme. The initiative is projected to make Pengejaran Village not merely a raw material producing centre, but also an independent coffee processing hub in the Kintamani area.
