Kinship the key to some success

JAKARTA (JP): The 19th SEA Games will hold sweet memories for siblings who made full use of their close kinship to win medals, especially those who performed in tandem.

Indonesia's cycling queen Nurhayati did not stand alone on her road to a perfect clean sweep of five gold medals. She teamed up with sister Nuraini, who left the Games with smiles wreathed around her pair of silvers.

Also in the velodrome, Henky Setiawan, Nurhayati's boyfriend, and brother Herry Janto, helped each other to restore Indonesia's supremacy in the sport.

Games sensation Liza Andriyani, who upset women's world number 37 tennis player Tamarine Tanasugarn, played a key role in Indonesia's victory in the women's tennis team event, as did her brother Sulistyo Wibowo in the men's event. Each of them won gold in same sex doubles, but had to settle for the bronze when it came to partnering each other in the mixed doubles.

Tennis also saw Paradorn Srichaphan and his brother Narathorn work together to give Thailand two silvers in the team and doubles events.

In the swimming pool, the Thai Sethsothorn brothers, Torlarp and Torwai, produced a one-two finish in the 1,500m freestyle, and then anchored a team that took silver in the 4X100m medley relay. (amd)
