King Charles Backs Prince Andrew's Arrest: The Law Must Be Upheld
King Charles III has responded to the arrest carried out by British police of the former Prince of England, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. The King expressed his support for the ongoing legal proceedings against his brother.
“I have learned with deep concern the news regarding Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and the alleged misconduct in public office,” King Charles III said, as reported by Al Jazeera on Thursday (19/2/2026).
King Charles affirmed that the British monarchy supports a thorough investigation into the alleged offences committed by Andrew. He emphasised that the law must be upheld regardless of social status.
“What follows is a full, fair, and proper process in which these matters are investigated in the right way and by the right authorities. In this regard, as I have said before, they have our full support and cooperation,” he added.
“Let me state clearly: the law must be upheld. While this process is ongoing, it would not be appropriate for me to comment further on this matter,” Charles continued.
Prince Andrew was arrested by British police on Thursday (19/2) local time. He was detained at his residence in the Norfolk area of eastern England.
In their statement, as reported by BBC and AFP, British police said the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor — as he is now known — was carried out in connection with misconduct in public office during his tenure as a British trade envoy.
“As part of the investigation, today (19/2) we arrested a man in his sixties from Norfolk on suspicion of misconduct in public office,” Thames Valley Police stated, without naming the suspect.
“The man is currently in police custody,” Thames Valley Police said in their statement. “We will not be naming the man who has been arrested, in accordance with national guidelines,” the police statement added.
In addition to making the arrest, police also carried out a number of searches connected to Andrew.
