The daughter of North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un is reportedly set to lead the country’s Missile Administration, the body overseeing Pyongyang’s nuclear arsenal. Kim Ju Ae, believed to be around 13 or 14 years old, is assessed by South Korean intelligence to be acting as a director-general of missiles while authorities monitor the ongoing Ninth Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea.

The Chosun Ilbo newspaper, citing a high-level government source familiar with the matter, reported that the intelligence agency received information regarding Ju Ae’s appointment to the position.

Officially, the position of director of the administration is still listed under Jang Chang-ha. However, according to intelligence assessments, Kim’s daughter is said to be receiving briefings from generals and providing strategic guidance.

The South Korean National Intelligence Service previously told lawmakers that Ju Ae’s public appearances indicate she is in the process of being appointed as a successor, adding that there are indications she has expressed views on specific policies.

The teenager has been seen accompanying her father on several important military agendas, including the launch of intercontinental ballistic missiles and inspections of weapons systems.

North Korean state media first confirmed Ju Ae’s existence in November 2022, when she accompanied Kim during the launch of the Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile and was simply referred to as his ‘beloved daughter’. Pyongyang has never officially revealed her name.

Reports of her new role come amid Kim’s continued efforts to showcase the progress of his country’s weapons program.

On February 18, he was photographed driving a 600mm multi-barrel rocket launcher capable of carrying nuclear warheads in Pyongyang and claimed the system was one of the most powerful in its class.

State media broadcast footage of the launch vehicles and said the rocket, which Kim claims has the capability to rival short-range ballistic missiles and uses artificial intelligence in its guidance system, has completely changed modern artillery warfare. (H-4)
