The supreme leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Kim Jong Un, personally welcomed the arrival of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko in a magnificent state ceremony at Kim Il Sung Square, Pyongyang, on Wednesday (25/3/2026).

This official visit fulfils a direct invitation from Kim Jong Un to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries. The square was lively with rows of national flags from both nations fluttering, as well as the presence of an honour guard and the Korean People’s Army (KPA) cavalry honour guard.

The ceremony began when the limousine carrying President Lukashenko arrived at the location, accompanied by welcoming music. Kim Jong Un warmly greeted Lukashenko’s arrival and introduced him to the elite members of the Party and North Korean government officials present.

Several high-ranking officials accompanying Kim Jong Un included Jo Yong Won (Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly), Choe Son Hui (Foreign Minister), and Kim Tok Hun (First Vice Premier of the Cabinet).

Meanwhile, the Belarusian delegation present included Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Shuleiko, as well as ministers from the sectors of Foreign Affairs, Health, Education, and Industry.

The climax of the ceremony was marked by the playing of both countries’ national anthems, accompanied by a 21-gun salute as the highest form of honour. In the procession, President Lukashenko, accompanied by Kim Jong Un, inspected the KPA honour guard, followed by a military parade.

Thousands of Pyongyang residents and students filled the square area. They were seen waving the national flags of both countries and carrying flower arrangements as a sign of hospitality towards the state guest.

At the end of the welcoming procession, President Aleksandr Lukashenko expressed deep appreciation to the North Korean government and people.

“Alexandr Lukashenko expressed sincere thanks to the DPRK government and people for this genuine hospitality,” the official report stated.

This visit marks a new chapter in diplomacy between Pyongyang and Minsk, which is expected to open further opportunities for cooperation in various strategic sectors involving relevant ministries from both sides. (KCNA/Z-2)
