Kim Jong Un Issues Sudden War Ultimatum, Potential for Asian Conflict

North Korean state media (KCNA) has launched harsh criticism against the United States’ move to expand the command structure of the U.S. Forces Japan (USFJ). Pyongyang warned that the potential for military clashes on the Korean Peninsula is no longer merely a possibility, but simply a matter of time.

Quoting a Reuters report on Friday (31/07/2026), the KCNA editorial assessed that the addition of personnel to the USFJ headquarters proves that the command is being transformed into a full-scale ‘war command’. Pyongyang accused Washington of preparing the Japan Self-Defence Forces (SDF) to become involved in open conflict within the Asia-Pacific region.

The statement from the state media follows an admission by USFJ Commander, Lieutenant General Stephen Jost, to the Japanese newspaper Asahi. Jost confirmed that the number of staff at the USFJ headquarters has increased by 215 personnel compared to last year to strengthen command functions and enhance coordination with US allies.

KCNA asserted that the recent increase in military cooperation between the US, South Korea, and Japan has triggered a surge in regional tensions. The agency estimated that USFJ units would be among the first reinforcements deployed to the Korean Peninsula should physical conflict break out.

“Washington’s military adventures demonstrate an increasingly real threat, which ultimately justifies North Korea’s steps to continue developing its nuclear capabilities as a means of deterrence,” the KCNA editorial stated.

This editorial is the fourth publication released by KCNA this month condemning the military policies of the US, Japan, and South Korea. In addition to the official media editorials, several high-ranking North Korean officials have repeatedly issued statements condemning the trilateral military cooperation and opposing what Pyongyang perceives as the hostile policies of its allies.
