Kidney dysfunction linked to impotence

SEMARANG, Central Java: At least 50 percent of people with chronic kidney dysfunction also suffer from impotence or sexual dysfunction, according to Murni Indrastuti, an intern at Karyadi hospital here, Antara reported.

Murni also said in a symposium on the subject that fertility was in many cases affected.

Among possible causes stated were the accumulation of uremia toxins (substances which the body cannot eliminate through urine), malnutrition, hypertension, hormonal reasons and medicines prescribed.

The variety of possible causes made it important for people to act on early symptoms to prevent chronic kidney disease setting in, she said.

In addition to the kidneys, she said the chronic condition affects muscles and bones, the nervous system and digestion. (01)
