Governor of East Java Khofifah Indar Parawansa held a subsidized market in Semampir Village, Kediri City, on Saturday (23 May) afternoon. This move is a concrete effort by the East Java Provincial Government to control inflation and ensure affordable prices for essential goods ahead of Eid al-Adha 1447 H.

Despite heavy rain, hundreds of residents enthusiastically queued to purchase groceries at below-market prices. This location in Kediri is the 69th in a series of subsidized markets organised by the East Java provincial government across various regions.

“Ahead of Eid al-Adha, we want the public to feel secure with sufficient stock, smooth distribution, and controlled prices. That’s why we continue to hold these subsidized markets so people can access essential goods at affordable rates,” Khofifah said during her site visit.

Khofifah stressed that the subsidized markets are an effective tool to maintain public purchasing power. The commodities sold are government-subsidised, priced below the Maximum Retail Price (HET).

In addition to staple items, garlic is available at Rp6,000 per 250 grams, shallots at Rp7,000 per 250 grams, and a chilli package at Rp5,000 for 200 grams.

Khofifah added that the market locations were deliberately chosen away from traditional markets to prevent the government subsidy program from disrupting existing commercial ecosystems in conventional markets.

“Essential goods are sufficiently available, Insha’Allah. We are ensuring prices remain affordable so citizens can meet their daily needs,” she concluded.

Maulidya, a resident of Semampir, said the program has been very helpful. “Despite heavy rain, I came because of the Eid al-Adha needs and the lower prices here. It’s very helpful,” she said.
