Khofifah optimistic Banyuwangi Central Market will become national benchmark
East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa is optimistic that Banyuwangi Central Market in East Java will become a national benchmark, particularly as a model for a clean, tidy, and sustainable market, as well as a centre for economic growth in the district at the eastern tip of Java.
“We, I together with the Banyuwangi Regent, accompanied the Vice President to review the central market revitalisation. The concept is excellent. The clean and tidy market will make both buyers and sellers comfortable. I think it deserves to be a national benchmark,” Khofifah said after reviewing the revitalisation progress of Banyuwangi Central Market in Banyuwangi, East Java, on Friday.
She also praised the new revitalisation concept for Banyuwangi Central Market, which is built on a 10,600 m² plot of land with a building area of 15,873 m². Governor Khofifah stated that the central market can accommodate 397 kiosks, 356 stalls, and 45 existing kiosks, bringing the total capacity of Banyuwangi Central Market to 798 traders.
Furthermore, she added, the market consists of two floors and is divided into several zones, such as food, non-food, wet food, dry food, household goods, and culinary. Khofifah noted that the new concept in the revitalisation of Banyuwangi Central Market makes the market more organised, appearing neat and clean.
“The wet and dry food areas are separated, and food and non-food are also separated, making it neater and cleaner,” she said. Khofifah added that the revitalisation of Banyuwangi Central Market did not completely change the face of the market but retained some of the old building facades, providing a touch so it does not appear merely as a traditional market, but has a modern touch.
“This market is a heritage building, so it was not completely changed; some sides were retained, so the revitalisation focused on arrangement to make it cleaner and tidier,” she said. Information obtained indicates that the construction of Banyuwangi Central Market is 100 percent complete and is currently in the maintenance and refinement stage, while the operation of the market is awaiting the handover from the central government to the regional government in the near future.
