Khofifah makes Trans Jatim free on 17 August 2026
Surabaya (ANTARA) - East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa has made Trans Jatim services free on 17 August 2026 as a gift for the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia.
“This is an Independence gift for the people of East Java. Specifically on 17 August, please make use of Trans Jatim free of charge across all Gerbangkertasusila and Malang Raya corridors, except for Trans Jatim Luxury,” said Khofifah in Surabaya, East Java, on Saturday.
The free service applies for one day across all Trans Jatim corridors in the Gerbangkertasusila and Malang Raya areas, with the exception of the Trans Jatim Luxury service.
Khofifah said the policy is a form of appreciation from the East Java Provincial Government as well as an invitation for the public to make greater use of public transport.
According to her, independence is not only understood by remembering and honouring the struggle of the heroes, but also through efforts to provide services that deliver real benefits to the public.
“Independence must be something we can feel in our daily lives. One way is through making it easier for people to move, to reach various activities and to connect with one another,” she said.
Khofifah said public transport has a broader role than simply carrying passengers from one point to another.
Public transport provides public access to workplaces, schools and universities, public service centres, economic centres, and social spaces.
For this reason, the East Java Provincial Government continues to strengthen Trans Jatim so that it becomes a safe, comfortable, affordable and integrated mobility option for the public.
“In every journey there is economic activity, education, work and encounters between people. So when mobility access becomes easier, we are in fact also opening up more opportunities for the public,” she said.
Khofifah hopes the free service will be an opportunity for people who have never used Trans Jatim to try and get to know the public transport service owned by the East Java Provincial Government.
“There may be people who have never ridden Trans Jatim. On 17 August, please give it a try. Let us feel together that public transport can be a comfortable and affordable mobility option,” she said.
She added that the development of public transport is also part of efforts to build increasingly sustainable public mobility.
The more people use public transport, the greater the impact on mobility efficiency, reducing dependence on private vehicles, traffic congestion and emissions.
“Let us make public transport part of a safer, more comfortable, more efficient and more sustainable mobility lifestyle. Public transport is a shared facility, so let us make use of it and look after it together,” she said.
According to Khofifah, the spirit of “Merdeka untuk Bergerak, Merdeka untuk Terhubung” (Free to Move, Free to Connect) is in line with the East Java Provincial Government’s efforts to build inter-regional connectivity.
Trans Jatim is expected not only to become a transport option for the public, but also a link for social and economic activity between regions.
“When connectivity improves, public access to education, work and economic centres also becomes more open. This is one form of how public transport development has an impact on public productivity and welfare,” she said.
Khofifah invited the public to make the 81st Anniversary of Indonesian Independence a momentum to strengthen togetherness and optimism to continue building Indonesia, especially East Java.
“Free to Move, Free to Connect. East Java for All. Long live the 81st Republic of Indonesia. May Indonesia become more advanced, sovereign and prosperous,” she said.
