East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa hopes that frozen semen from the Belgian Blue cattle breed developed by the Singosari Artificial Insemination Centre (BBIB) in Malang Regency can accelerate the achievement of meat self-sufficiency. Speaking at BBIB Singosari on Sunday, Khofifah said the development of Belgian Blue frozen semen has been successfully carried out by BBIB Singosari and is already widely used in East Java, including in Mojokerto, Situbondo, Bondowoso, and Jember. “I hope that the strengths of BBIB Singosari can be utilised by all regions because Indonesia fundamentally has the potential for meat self-sufficiency. The Belgian Blue trials have been relatively successful,” she said. BBIB Singosari currently has five Belgian Blue bulls and is capable of producing 1,000 to 2,000 doses of frozen semen per month. Overall, the facility manages 165 superior bulls of various breeds. In addition to cattle, the facility also houses 30 male goats, 279 dairy cows, and 411 goat breeding stock as sources for national livestock breeding development. As of June 2026, the total frozen semen production at the Malang Regency insemination facility reached 895,559 doses. According to the Governor, if this potential is maximised, meat self-sufficiency could be achieved within three years. BBIB Singosari is also continuing to develop frozen semen from Wagyu cattle. This Japanese breed has high economic value and is in great demand by restaurants and five-star hotels, with the average market price of the meat reaching IDR 1 million per kilogram. Head of BBIB Singosari, Drh Akbar, stated that frozen semen from Belgian Blue cattle is the most sought after by breeders because the market price for a one-month-old calf has reached IDR 15 to 20 million. This potential has led to high demand for Belgian Blue frozen semen. “Our price is around IDR 15,000 per dose for Belgian Blue, while Simental and Limousin types are IDR 10,000. Wagyu is IDR 7,000,” Akbar said. He added that each straw of frozen semen from BBIB Singosari must contain a minimum standard of 25 million sperm cells. “In East Java, the success rate is 1.5 to 1.8 inseminations per pregnancy, with the mated females having a body condition score of 3, and a standard female weight of 400 to 450 kilograms,” he explained.
