Surabaya — East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa has described retired General Try Sutrisno as a true soldier and statesman in light of his dedication to safeguarding the sovereignty and integrity of the Republic of Indonesia.

Khofifah expressed her deepest condolences on the passing of Indonesia’s sixth Vice President (1993-1998), who also served as Commander of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia.

“Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. The Indonesian nation has lost one of its finest sons. He was a true soldier and statesman who dedicated his entire life to safeguarding the sovereignty and integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia,” Khofifah said in Surabaya, East Java, on Monday.

According to her, the late Sutrisno was known as a firm and disciplined figure with a strong commitment to national stability and national development. His exemplary leadership and service are regarded as an important legacy of values for future generations.

“We remember him not only as a leader, but as a figure who consistently upheld the spirit of nationalism and unity,” she added.

As a mark of respect for his contributions, the Governor of East Java called on the public to fly the red and white flag at half-mast for two full days in accordance with Law Number 24 of 2009 concerning the Flag, Language, and National Symbols and National Anthem, particularly Article 12, paragraph 2, which stipulates the flying of flags at half-mast for two days following the death of former Presidents and Vice Presidents.

Khofifah also prayed that the late Sutrisno would achieve a good end and that all his deeds of worship be accepted by Allah Almighty, and that his surviving family members be given patience, strength, and sincerity in facing their loss.

“May Allah place him in the best of places by His side and may his surviving family always be given forbearance,” she concluded.
