Iraq has announced three days of mourning following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“With deep sorrow, we express our condolences to the noble people of Iran and the entire Muslim world,” said government spokesman Bassem al-Awadi in a statement on Sunday (1/3/2026), as cited by AFP.

Khamenei was killed in a US-Israeli attack on Iran on Saturday morning. Iraq described the assault as “blatant aggression.”

According to reports from Iran’s state television on Sunday (1/3/2026), Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian and two other senior officials will lead Iran during the transition period following Khamenei’s death.

Iranian state media had previously confirmed that many members of Khamenei’s family were also killed in the attack, including his daughter, granddaughter, daughter-in-law, and son-in-law.
