Khamenei Dead, Red Flag of Vengeance Flies at Iran's Jamkaran Mosque

Iran’s government has raised a red flag at the dome of the Jamkaran Mosque, a Shia pilgrimage site in the holy city of Qom, following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The revered Shia leader was killed in a combined military operation conducted by Israel and the United States.

According to reports, the Jamkaran Mosque’s official account posted on Sunday, 1 March 2026, showing the red flag being raised during Khamenei’s funeral procession. The image showed Khamenei’s photograph in a casket being carried to his final resting place.

The raising of the flag serves as a symbol of vengeance against the United States and Israel.

“The raising of the flag ‘Ya Lazarat al-Hussein’ over the sacred dome of Jamkaran Mosque in seeking blood and vengeance against the criminal Americans and Zionists,” stated the caption accompanying the post.

For context, US President Donald Trump announced Khamenei’s death resulting from the Israeli and American military operation in Iran on Saturday, 28 February.

“Khamenei, one of the most evil people in history, is now dead,” Trump said on his Truth Social media network, according to AFP.

On Sunday, 1 March, Iran confirmed the death of its Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran declared a national mourning period lasting 40 days.

According to CNN and AFP reports, in addition to Khamenei, his daughter, son-in-law and grandson also died in the operation. Furthermore, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Commander Mohammad Pakpour and Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh also perished.
