Khairun University PKM Team Strengthens Violence Prevention and Handling

The commitment to creating a safe, comfortable, and violence-free educational environment continues to be realised by Universitas Khairun (Unkhair) through a Community Service Programme (PKM) funded by the Directorate of Research and Community Service (DPPM) of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology. One concrete step was taken by the Unkhair PKM Team by developing a website-based reporting system while providing education on the prevention and handling of violence at SMA Negeri 4 Ternate City. The programme, which ran from mid-May to July 2026, is part of efforts to support the realisation of a Safe School Without Violence, particularly in the Eastern Indonesia region. This activity not only introduced technological innovation but also strengthened teacher capacity and increased student awareness about the importance of creating a healthy learning environment free from bullying and other forms of violence. The Head of the Unkhair PKM Team, Sri Ayu Budi Lestari, explained that the programme was designed to help schools build a more effective violence prevention and handling system through the use of information technology. ‘We hope this collaboration does not stop at the programme implementation stage but can continue through ongoing implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. Our main goal is to help schools have a violence information and reporting system that is easily accessible, secure, and technology-based,’ she said. The development of the website is expected to be a solution to various obstacles faced by schools, particularly in the process of reporting cases of violence. Through the digital system, students can report incidents more easily, thereby minimising potential delays in handling. The Head of SMA Negeri 4 Ternate, Jabur Jamil, expressed appreciation for Universitas Khairun’s contribution and the programme funding support. According to him, the school had been planning to build a website-based reporting system for several years, but it was only realised through this collaboration. ‘We are very grateful to the Unkhair PKM Team and the Directorate of Research and Community Service (DPPM) of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology for their support. This programme is the answer to the school’s need to strengthen the violence prevention and handling system through the use of information technology,’ he said. The series of activities began with programme socialisation to the school, followed by training on website management for teachers. The training, guided by Syarifuddin M. Kapita, equipped participants with skills to operate the system, understand application features, and manage digital reporting administration. The PKM Team also held a counselling session themed ‘Safe School Without Violence’, attended by around 320 students in the SMA Negeri 4 Ternate hall on 8 July 2026. During the session, students gained an understanding of the forms of violence in the school environment, their impact on victims, and the importance of building a culture of mutual respect and the courage to report any acts of violence. Enthusiasm from participants was evident throughout the activity. Students actively engaged in discussions, asked questions, and participated in simulations on using the website as a medium for reporting cases of violence at school. As a closing activity, the PKM Team carried out direct implementation of the developed website. Students were guided on how to submit reports safely and responsibly through the system provided. The Vice Principal for Student Affairs, Ama, revealed that the presence of the website is a significant breakthrough for the school. Previously, case handling was often hampered because many students were reluctant to report due to fear or embarrassment. ‘Since 2023 we have formed a Violence Prevention and Handling Team (TPPK), but reporting remains the main challenge. With this website, we are optimistic that students will be more courageous in submitting reports so that every case can be handled more quickly, precisely, and measurably,’ he said. Through this synergy between higher education and schools, Universitas Khairun hopes this innovation can become a model for strengthening student protection systems in Eastern Indonesia. The combination of technology and education is expected to build a school culture that is more inclusive, responsive, and free from violence, so that all students can learn safely, comfortably, and with dignity.
