PDI Perjuangan General Secretary Hasto Kristiyanto confirmed that a meeting took place between President Prabowo Subianto and Indonesia’s fifth President Megawati Soekarnoputri at Merdeka Palace today, Thursday (19/3), with Megawati accompanied by Puan Maharani.

According to him, Megawati conveyed that the meeting occurred in a friendly atmosphere between two long-time acquaintances.

“Megawati told me it was a meeting between old friends and took place amicably for more than two hours,” he said.

Hasto explained that the two leaders discussed strategic issues related to national and state affairs, including the global geopolitical challenges facing Indonesia.

“In the meeting between the two leaders, strategic matters concerning the nation and state, as well as various geopolitical issues, were discussed,” he said.

He added that Megawati’s experience as president in facing multidimensional crises was part of the discussion, particularly regarding policy approaches emphasising a sense of priority and sense of urgency.

Furthermore, Hasto continued, the discussion also encompassed Indonesia’s role in the global arena, including its pioneering history in the Asian-African Conference and the Non-Aligned Movement, as well as the principle of free and active foreign policy.

On that occasion, Megawati also recounted her recent visit to the Middle East region, including to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

Hasto emphasised that PDI Perjuangan regards meetings between national leaders as part of the tradition of dialogue and deliberation that reflects the values of mutual cooperation.

“PDI Perjuangan asserts that the Indonesian nation has a spirit of mutual cooperation, so meetings between national leaders as occurred with President Prabowo and fifth President Megawati Soekarnoputri, besides being in line with national culture, for mutual dialogue and deliberation, are also aimed at the interests of the people, nation, and state,” said Hasto.
