Key Facts About Try Sutrisno: Viral Over President Jokowi's Apparent Snub
Retired General Try Sutrisno, Indonesia’s sixth Vice President, has passed away at the age of 90 years and 3 months at the Army Central Hospital (RSPAD) Gatot Soebroto in Central Jakarta, on Monday, 2 March. He breathed his last in the Intensive Care Unit (CICU) Ward 207, 2nd Floor at 06:58 Western Indonesia Time, following a decline in his health condition.
Sutrisno came to public attention once again in 2024 when a video circulated on social media showing President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) apparently failing to greet him during the commemoration of the Indonesian Armed Forces’ (TNI) 79th anniversary at the Monas area in Central Jakarta.
In response to the incident, the Presidential Palace issued a clarification. Yusuf Permana, Deputy for Protocol, Press and Media at the Presidential Secretariat, stated that President Jokowi had already greeted and spoken with Try Sutrisno and his wife in the VVIP holding room. Permana explained that as this interaction had already taken place beforehand, the moment captured in the video showed the President greeting other guests whom he had not yet met.
Sutrisno was known as a figure who could serve as an inspiration to younger generations in pursuing their aspirations, despite his humble background. Throughout his life, he was recognised as one of the military figures who subsequently held strategic positions within the New Order government.
State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi issued a statement regarding the passing of Indonesia’s sixth Vice President, Retired General Try Sutrisno.
