The development of the Ketandan special parking facility (TKP) in Malioboro, Yogyakarta, is set to continue. In this second phase of construction, the facility’s capacity will increase to 1,200 parking units for motorcycles and 118 for cars.

Head of the Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) Transportation Agency, Chrestina Erni Widyastuti, stated that physical works for TKP Ketandan Phase II are expected to take approximately five months. Consequently, the TKP Ketandan has been closed since 20 July and will remain shut until 31 December 2026.

“This facility should be viewed more as part of strengthening the area’s parking and mobility system in a sustainable manner, rather than merely a prerequisite for implementing the full pedestrian scheme this November,” she said when contacted on Monday (20/7/2026).

Erni explained that following the completion of Phase I in 2025, TKP Ketandan had a total capacity of 535 motorcycle parking units and 87 car parking units. The budget ceiling for Phase II is Rp 9,374,750,000.

“With the Phase II development, that capacity will increase to 1,200 parking units for motorcycles and 118 for cars,” Erni said. “This means motorcycle parking capacity will increase by 665 units, or about 124 per cent, while car capacity will increase by 31 units, or about 36 per cent.”

According to the Acting Head of the Terminal and Parking Management Office at the DIY Transportation Agency, Rizki Budi Utomo, the Ketandan TKP development was divided into two phases due to budget constraints. The construction method for Phase II is nearly identical to Phase I, using bored pile foundations. Bored piles are deep, tube-shaped foundations installed to distribute heavy building loads to harder soil layers.

“Meanwhile, the main structure of the building is dominated by steel construction, which is produced and assembled in a workshop beforehand, so that only the installation process takes place on site,” Rizki explained. “This method is expected to reduce heavy work activities on site, speed up the construction process, and minimise the impact on the environment and surrounding community activities.”

During the closure of TKP Ketandan for Phase II development, several alternative parking locations remain available in the Malioboro area. These include the Beskalan and Senopati parking facilities, parking pockets owned by the Yogyakarta city government, and private parking areas.

“Information regarding alternative parking locations will also be disseminated through various media channels, including social media, so that the public can still easily access parking facilities during the construction period,” Rizki said. “We are also encouraging the private sector to open and manage parking pockets in the surrounding area to support Malioboro becoming a full pedestrian zone.”
