Kertajati and YIA Serve as Alternatives to Seven Airports Closed Following Anak Krakatau Eruption
Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi has revealed that seven airports have been closed as a result of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. Four airports have been designated as alternatives for passenger flights.
He made the announcement during a hybrid limited meeting on disaster management at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday (7/9/2026). The meeting was attended by President Prabowo Subianto, cabinet members and the heads of disaster-affected regions.
“As an alternative to the closure of those seven airports, we have prepared several airports, Mr President,” Dudy said during the meeting.
Minister Dudy then set out which airports would serve as alternatives to the seven temporarily closed facilities. These alternative airports also handle international flights.
“They are Kertajati Airport, Ahmad Yani Airport, Adi Sumarmo Airport and Yogyakarta International Airport as alternative airports,” he said.
The Ministry of Transportation had earlier stated that one of the eight airports closed following the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau had resumed operations. Atung Bungsu Airport in Pagar Alam, South Sumatra, has now reopened.
“Of the eight airports we declared temporarily closed, one can now be reopened. Based on paper test results showing negative findings, the airport in question is the one in Pagar Alam,” Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi said via the ministry’s official Instagram account on Monday (7/9).
Meanwhile, seven other airports remain out of operation:
Soekarno-Hatta Airport
Halim Perdanakusuma Airport
Radin Inten II Airport, Lampung
Husein Sastranegara Airport
Budiarto Curug Airport
Pondok Cabe Airport
Taufik Kiemas Airport
