Kepulauan Seribu can process organic waste into compost within 10 hours
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Kepulauan Seribu Regent Muhammad Fadjar Churniawan has stated that the Thousand Islands Regency is now capable of processing organic waste into compost within approximately 10 hours through the use of rapid composter innovation technology.
“Alhamdulillah, Kepulauan Seribu has a rapid composter. The result is that from 50 kilogrammes of organic waste, within just ten hours it becomes compost that can be utilised effectively,” Fadjar said in Jakarta on Wednesday.
He revealed that the application of this technology is part of the implementation of DKI Jakarta Governor Instruction Number 5 of 2026, which emphasises the reduction and management of waste at its source.
He also affirmed that Kepulauan Seribu must be able to manage waste independently without relying on waste shipments to the mainland.
Moreover, according to him, environmental cleanliness is an important factor in supporting the tourism sector, which is one of the mainstays of the Kepulauan Seribu economy.
“A tourism area must have a clean environment and its residents must be friendly. If tourists come in droves, the economic potential will also grow. The community should not merely be spectators, but must become economic actors who meet the needs of tourists,” said Fadjar.
Meanwhile, Head of the Kepulauan Seribu Environmental Sub-agency Achmad Hariadi explained that the rapid composter is one of the organic waste management innovations beginning to be implemented in Jakarta.
“We are witnessing new technology being applied in DKI Jakarta. Processing organic waste within one day, or about ten hours, can directly become compost,” said Hariadi.
He mentioned that the compost produced by the device can be directly used by the community for greening and planting in home environments and public facilities.
“The management mechanism is carried out by collecting organic waste that has been sorted by residents every day. The sorted organic waste is directly placed into the rapid composter, processed for about 10 hours, and produces compost that can be used immediately without needing to be dried again,” Hariadi revealed.
