KEPPOKP pushes for telecommunications network transformation in Papua Highlands

The Executive Committee for the Acceleration of Special Autonomy for Papua (KEPPOKP) is pushing for the transformation of the telecommunications network in Papua Pegunungan in order to improve internet access in the region.

KEPPOKP chairman Velix V Wanggai said in a written statement in Wamena on Saturday that, to drive the transformation of the telecommunications network in Papua Pegunungan, the committee has coordinated with the Telkom group on the installation of fibre optic cables.

“We want the internet facilities enjoyed by people in the Papua region to also be enjoyed by our brothers and sisters in Papua Pegunungan. So we are pushing for fibre optic cables to be installed as soon as possible from Jayapura to Wamena,” he said.

According to him, the fibre optic cables currently being installed by the Telkom group, or Telkomsel, have already reached Waris District in Keerom Regency, Papua.

He explained that the committee has carried out an assessment of the trans-Papua road from Jayapura to Wamena to examine the condition of the road infrastructure and the potential route for the fibre optic cables.

“To ensure the fibre optic cables can be installed from Waris to Wamena, our team has directly inspected the condition of the trans-Papua road from Jayapura to Wamena,” he said.

He added that the installation of fibre optic cables represents tangible support from Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto for permanent internet connectivity for the people of Papua Pegunungan.

“The installation of the Jayapura–Papua Pegunungan fibre optic cable is a permanent policy for the advancement of digital connectivity across the Land of Papua as a whole,” he said.
