Deputy Minister of Home Affairs (Wamendagri) Akhmad Wiyagus emphasised that the city of Kendari has substantial opportunities to develop into a centre of economic growth as well as a hub for the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) industry in eastern Indonesia.

He made this statement while serving as the inspecting officer at the ceremony commemorating the 195th anniversary of the city of Kendari at the City Hall Ceremony Field in Southeast Sulawesi (Sultra) on Saturday (9/5).

Wiyagus expressed appreciation to the local government apparatus, community leaders, academics, and all elements of society who have contributed to the progress of Kendari as it reaches its 195th year.

According to him, the spirit of collaboration and active participation from all parties serves as the main pillar in strengthening responsive, transparent, and accountable local governance.

He assessed that this year’s Kendari anniversary commemoration is particularly special as it coincides with the momentum of hosting the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) ASPAC 2026.

“This situation positions Kendari not merely as the capital of Sultra, but also as a centre of attention in the Asia-Pacific region for local governance,” Wiyagus stated in his release.

He said that the international community’s trust in selecting Kendari as the host of this global forum is a recognition of the city’s capacity, which is deemed on par with major cities worldwide. This demonstrates that Kendari’s development is on the right track, aligning infrastructure development with local cultural strengths.

“A modern city that still preserves its cultural roots. An economically ambitious city that remains socially inclusive,” Wiyagus remarked.

On the other hand, he appreciated Kendari’s development achievements amid global economic dynamics. The city has recorded an economic growth rate of 5.16 per cent, surpassing the national growth.

In addition, price stability has been maintained through the performance of the Regional Inflation Control Team (TPID) with an inflation rate of 2.96 per cent.
