Kendal not ready for election

SEMARANG, Central Java: Kendal regency's elections might have to be postponed because of a lack of state funds, an official said on Monday.

"If the funds are there on May 5, we can hold the election, but if they aren't, we will have to postpone," Kendal election committee head Kami Hartono said.

New election regulations, which stipulate each voting booth can serve up to 600 voters, would cut costs from an estimated Rp 6.5 billion (US$684,210) to Rp 5.4 billion, Kami said.

That budget would be proposed to the regental council on May 4, he said. -- JP
