Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) has urged Wikimedia Commons to promptly complete its registration to obtain the Electronic System Operator (PSE) Registration Certificate as a form of compliance with Indonesian laws and regulations. Previously, the Wikimedia Commons website was temporarily inaccessible due to content control mechanisms triggered by indications of gambling-related content. Access to the site has now been normalised since Wednesday (25/3) at 22:00, allowing the public to access it again. The inaccessibility of Wikimedia Commons stemmed from a system that detected keywords and visual content associated with similarities to prohibited content categories, particularly gambling, thus classifying Wikimedia Commons for handling, said Director General of Digital Space Supervision at Kemkomdigi, Alexander Sabar, in Central Jakarta on Friday. After receiving information about the blockage, the technical team immediately conducted a manual verification of the indications of negative content, including a review of classification parameters to ensure detection accuracy. Once identified as a false positive, we immediately normalised access to Wikimedia Commons, he added. As a follow-up to the situation, Kemkomdigi has audited the system and conducted internal technical coordination for the control team to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of the system and operational mechanisms to enhance the accuracy of negative content detection. According to Alex, this situation could have been prevented if Wikimedia Commons had been included in Kemkomdigi’s whitelist database. The site has not yet been added to the ministry’s whitelist because it has not completed its PSE registration. We are committed to keeping Indonesia’s digital space safe from illegal content, while ensuring that every policy step is taken proportionally, evidence-based, and prioritising the principle of prudence. Public trust is paramount in every effort we undertake, said Alex.
