Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) believes the establishment of a sovereign artificial intelligence (AI) fund could be a key driver in accelerating the development of national AI infrastructure.

Director of Artificial Intelligence and New Technology Ecosystems (AIKITA) at Kemkomdigi, Aju Widyasari, stated that infrastructure development is the foundation for Indonesia’s efforts to achieve AI sovereignty.

“When we talk about infrastructure, to achieve sovereign AI, the first step is what we can prepare to support this GPU-based infrastructure with adequate resources,” Aju said during a discussion in Jakarta on Wednesday.

She noted that one form of support could involve incentive schemes or funding to expand the use of green energy for AI data centre operations.

Aju also mentioned that the Daya Anagata Nusantara Investment Management Agency (Danantara) could play a role in supporting funding through investment cooperation involving both domestic and international investors.

She explained that energy supply is one of the main challenges in AI development, as data centres utilising graphics processing units (GPUs) require large and sustainable amounts of electricity.

“The need for AI could support the direction of green energy development, and this could eventually become an incentive for AI-based infrastructure providers,” she said.

The government is currently preparing a Sovereign AI Fund to support the development of the national AI ecosystem and strengthen Indonesia’s position as an AI technology hub in Southeast Asia.

The fund is proposed to be managed by Danantara with a financing scheme involving both the government and the private sector.

The establishment of the Sovereign AI Fund is expected to commence between 2027 and 2029. The fund is designed to support the development of AI infrastructure, including data centres, computing services, digital talent development, and other needs of the national AI ecosystem.
